2026 Lexus RX
2026 Land Rover Discovery

Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Lexus RX are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Discovery doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the RX are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Discovery doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

The Lexus RX has a standard driver’s side knee airbag mounted low on the dashboard. The knee airbag helps prevent the driver from sliding under the seatbelts or the main frontal airbag; this keeps the driver better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. A knee airbag also helps keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The Discovery doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The RX has a standard Secondary Collision Brake, which automatically applies the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Discovery doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The RX has standard Intuitive Parking Assist with Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor for objects to the rear and automatically applies the brakes to prevent a collision. The Discovery doesn’t offer automatic braking for stationary objects directly to the rear.

Both the RX and the Discovery have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

Warranty

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the RX 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Discovery. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Discovery ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are over 20 percent more Lexus dealers than there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the RX’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Lexus RX Hybrid’s reliability 17 points higher than the Discovery and the Lexus RX is rated 39 points higher than the Discovery.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the RX second among midsize premium suvs in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The Discovery isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 42 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 20th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Transmission

The RX offers an available continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Discovery doesn’t offer a CVT.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the RX 500h’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the Discovery:

The RX 450h+ Luxury executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the Discovery Dynamic SE (26.8 seconds @ .65 average G’s vs. 28.1 seconds @ .6 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the RX 500h F Sport Performance’s turning circle is 5.3 feet tighter than the Discovery’s (35.4 feet vs. 40.7 feet). The RX’s turning circle is 1.9 feet tighter than the Discovery’s (38.8 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

Chassis

The Lexus RX may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 700 pounds less than the Land Rover Discovery.

The RX is 6 inches narrower than the Discovery, making the RX easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The RX is 7 inches shorter in height than the Discovery, making the RX much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Passenger Space

The RX has .1 inches more front headroom, 2 inches more front legroom and .3 inches more rear hip room than the Discovery.

Cargo Capacity

The RX has a much larger cargo volume than the Discovery with its rear seat up (29.6 vs. 6.1 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The RX’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Discovery does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the RX offers optional cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Discovery doesn’t offer cornering lights. The RX also offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the RX has standard extendable sun visors. The Discovery doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The RX (except 350) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Discovery doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The RX’s optional Advanced Park can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Advanced Park will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Discovery’s automatic parking system requires operating the brakes and transmission to safely park and it doesn’t offer remote control parking.

Model Availability

The RX is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Discovery doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Economic Advantages

According to iSeeCars.com the 2026 Lexus RX retains 56.19% to 61.13% of its original value after 5 years, significantly more than the 39.37% resale value of the 2026 Land Rover Discovery after five years, which can save the Lexus’ owner up to $17463 in depreciation.
